PaymentVision 5.9

PaymentVision 5.9 is now available in production. The purpose of this release is to make 1 change (ACH Return Codes) and introduce 1 new configuration option (Account Updater Watch List).

ACH Return Codes

The ACH network uses return codes to differentiate return reasons. In order to better differentiate unauthorized return reasons NACHA, the governing body of the ACH network, has repurposed a little used return code (R11) to be used in cases where a customer claims that there was an error with an otherwise authorized payment (e.g.; wrong date or wrong amount) .


The R10 code was previously used as a catch all for various unauthorized return reasons, including the above case.


Now, the R11 code will be used in cases where a customer claims that there was an error (e.g.; wrong date or wrong amount) with an otherwise authorized payment and the R1o code will be re-defined to reflect a more limited return reason scope.

Reason Description

The table below contains the reason descriptions of both return codes, as they appear within PaymentVision reporting applications, before and after the change.

R10Customer advises not authorized; item is ineligible, notice not provided, signatures not genuine, or item alteredCustomer Advises Originator is Not Known to Receiver and/or Originator is Not Authorized by Receiver to Debit Receiver’s Account
R11Check truncation entry return or state law affecting acceptance of PPD debit entry constituting notice of presentmentCustomer Advises Entry Not in Accordance with the Terms of the Authorization

Unauthorized Entry Return Rate

The re-purposed R11 return code joins R10 and R29 as an Unauthorized Entry and, as such, it is now:

  • returned when using the Advises Unauthorized return type filter within PaymentVision reporting applications
  • subject to the existing Unauthorized Entry Fee

Account Updater Watch List

Account Updater is a service that automatically updates payment cards when they are closed or replaced by the card issuer. In order to be eligible for an update, a card must be on a watch list.


A card would be ineligible for the watch list if it had not been added, edited or used in a payment within the last 12 months.


Now, as part of this release, the number of months a card must go unused before it is considered ineligible for Account Updater can be set at the organization level.
