What this means?
- No formal government standards exist for businesses to follow to ensure their websites comply with the ADA. To breach this gap and provide a single shared standard, a consortium of individuals and organizations around the world created guidelines, known as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines ( https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/ )(“WCAG”) that provides the steps needed to be ADA compliant for individuals, organizations, and governments internationally. WCAG are often referred to as the gold standard and widely respected as providing the best path to accessibility compliance.
- Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 USC § 794d) requires U.S. Federal government agencies to develop, procure, or maintain, information and communication technology (ICT), that it is accessible to persons with disabilities. The 2017 refresh of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 ( 82 FR 5790) requires federal agencies to adopt WCAG 2.0 standards for web accessibility.
- WCAG has been used in both state and federal court holdings as a standard of ADA web compliance.
